Prospecting

Our property is named "Bongongolong" after the Bongongolong gold field, where many prospectors had miners rights and washed for alluvial gold. As late as the  second world war, there were still a few people working the diggings.

There were several big and successful mines in the area at the turn of the 20th century, and a great many people living and working on what is now our property.

Des was taught by his maternal grandfather to seek the signs and pan for the elusive metal, and it has been a lifelong hobby. Anything you want to know about minerals in this area, he can tell you.

You certainly won't make your fortune, but when the creeks are running it is great fun to go out and wash a few dishes. We have had exchange students from all over the world who have taken home a few grains of Gundagai gold.
